JEST 2018 Application Form can be submitted till 16th December 2017. Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) is conducted by several premier research institutes for admission to PhD and Integrated PhD programme in its different participating institutions. The JEST examination is held for two subjects only, namely, physics and theoretical computer science/neuroscience/Computational Biology. JEST is recognized as a National Eligibility Test (NET) by the Science & Engineering Research Board (SERB). In this article, we are providing detailed information about JEST 2018.

The official exam schedule of JEST 2018 is given in the below table:

JEST 2018 Application Form

For convenience of the candidates, online filling of application for JEST 2018 will be facilitated by the authority.
JEST application form 2018 has been released from 17th November 2017.
To apply for JEST 2018, candidates must have a valid email-id.
At the time of filling the application form, candidate also has to upload the scanned photograph and signature in jpg format.
The application procedure would be completed after submission of application form and successful e-payment of application fee.
After submitting the application form, candidates will receive an intimation email from JEST website regarding successful submission of application.

Application Fee:

The amount that a candidate need to pay in the form of application fee is Rs. 300 (Rs 150 for SC/ST applicants only). The application fee can be paid using Debit/Credit cards and Net-banking.

Eligibility Criteria

Here, we are providing the eligibility criteria for JEST 2018. However, candidates are suggested to also visit the websites of the participating institutes of their interest to know more about the qualification requirement.

Courses	Eligibility Criteria
Ph.D Programme Physics	M.Sc. in Physics is the prescribed qualification to apply for this course. However, some institutions also accepts B.E. / B.Tech. / M.Sc. / M.E. / M.Tech. in disciplines of Applied Physics and Mathematics.
Ph.D in Theoretical Computer Science at IMSc	M.Sc./ M.E./ M.Tech. in Computer Science and related disciplines and should be interested in the mathematical aspects of computer science.
Ph D in Neuroscience at NBRC	M.Sc (Physics/Mathematics), B.E/ B.Tech/ M.C.A in Computer Science
Ph D in Computational Biology at IMSc	M.Sc./ M.E./M.Tech./MCA in any engineering or science discipline, with good mathematical skills and strong interest in biological problems.
Integrated M.Sc./ M.Tech – Ph.D Programme (Physics)	B. Sc. (Physics / Mathematics). At NISER, B.Sc (Physics) or B.E./B. Tech in Engineering Physics, with a minimum of first class marks, will be the minimum qualification. For admission to IIA, the qualification required is B.Sc. (Physics/Mathematics)/B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical/Instrumentation/Engineering Physics/Electronics and Communications/ Computer Science and Engineering/Optics and Photonics will be consider. B.Sc. (Physics) will be considered at IISER-Pune, ICTS-TIFR, NCRA-TIFR, and TIFR-TCIS.
Integrated Ph.D Programme in Theoretical Computer Science at IMSc	B.Sc./B.E./B.Tech./M.C.A. in Computer Science or related disciplines.
Integrated M.Tech – Ph.D. Programme at IIA	M.Sc. (Physics/Applied Physics)/Post-B.Sc. (Hons) in Optics and Optoelectronics/Radio Physics and Electronics.
Integrated Ph.D. Programme at IISER IISER. Thiruvananthapuram.	B. Sc. (Physics) or B.E./B. Tech. in any discipline.

JEST Exam Pattern 2018

The details about the JEST 2018 exam pattern is given below:

Courses Offered: JEST is held for entrance to the PhD and Integrated PhD programme in Physics and Theoretical Computer Science.
Exam Mode: The test will be conducted in OMR answer sheet (offline exam).
Number of Questions: The question paper of Physics will have two parts i.e. Part A and Part B. There will be 25 questions in each part with a total of 50 questions. Theoretical Computer Science will have total 7 questions.
Type of Questions: The question paper of Theoretical Computer Science have questions of both types – some requiring short answers and some involving detailed problem solving. Physics question paper will be based on objective type questions.
Exam Duration: The test will be of 3 hours.
Marking Scheme: The Part-A of Physics question paper will contain questions of 3 marks each while Part-B will contain questions of 1 mark.

JEST 2018 Syllabus

The standard of the Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST) will be that of graduation or post-graduation level. The test of Theoretical Computer Science focuses on Analytical Reasoning and Deduction, Combinatorics, Data Structures and Algorithms, Discrete Mathematics, Graph Theory, Principles of Programming. The questions of Physics will appear from topics such as Mathematical Methods, Classic Mechanics, Electromagnetism and Optics, Quantum Mechanics, Thermodynamics & Statistical Physics and Electronics.

Question: Is there any limits in the number of attempts for appearing the JEST?

Answer: No. Candidates can appear the JEST any number of times.

Question: What is the age limit for appearing the test?

Answer: There is no restriction on age for appearing in JEST examination.

Question: Is application fee of JEST examination refundable?

Answer: No. The application fee once paid will not be refunded.

Question: Which are the participating institutes that offers a Ph.D. Degree in Theoretical Computer Science ?

Answer: Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai is the only institution which currently offers a Ph. D. in Theoretical Computer Science.

Question: Which institutes offer a Ph.D. Degree in Neuroscience or Computational Biology?

Answer: National Brain Research Centre (NBRC), Gurgaon is the only institution which currently offers a Ph. D. in Neuroscience. Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc) Chennai offers a PhD in Computational Biology.

Question: Is it possible to make payment of the application fee after submitting the application?

Answer: No.

Question: How long the JEST score is valid?

Answer: JEST score is valid for only one year.

Question: Can candidates having B. Tech degree in Mechanical/Civil Engineering apply for JEST?

Answer: JEST is a screening test for admission to PhD and Int. PhD programme of different participating institutes in physics and theoretical computer science/neuroscience. It is conducted for two subjects only, namely, physics and theoretical computer science. However, the qualifications for admission to the PhD and Int. PhD programme in various participating institutes are different. So the candidate can visit the websites of the participating institutes of their interest to know more about the qualification requirement.

JEST Admit Card 2018

The admit card will be released from 25th January 2018. Candidates need to download the JEST Admit Card from the website only. Candidates are required to bring the admit card along with one identity proof to the examination centre.

JEST 2018 Answer Key

Candidates will appear the examination can check the JEST 2018 answer key through online mode. The answer key will be released after few days of exam and prior to result. The authority will declare the answer key for all sets.

JEST Result 2018

JEST 2018 result will be declared on the website after few days of the examination. It is expected that the result will be declared in the month of March 2018. The score card of JEST will be released after the result declaration. The validity of score card is for one year only.
